How To Make Rosin

How To Make Rosin

Cannabis concentrates such as rosins are some of the most sought-after aromatic cannabis extracts. Rosin can contain THC, delta 8 THC, CBD, and terpenes. Therefore, THC and delta 8 THC consumers use rosins to leverage the potent benefits of cannabis-delivered terpenes. Read on to learn about the key steps involved in making rosin.

What is Rosin?

Rosin is a solventless, waxy, pasty cannabis extract comprising high concentrations of varying compounds in the marijuana plant material. The weed rosin concentrate relies on heat and pressure to extract hemp compounds.

Weed rosin is recognized as a cleaner cannabis extract that is usually more expensive than other wax concentrates, which are made with butane solvents. Rosin is mainly consumed in a dab rig. However, you can also put it in a vape cartridge and vape pen.

Rosin is stronger than flower cannabis and is usually more flavorful and less potent than solvent cannabis concentrates. This is because the heated process makes rosin preserve terpenes.

Types of Rosin

There are various varying types of rosin, including:

Flower Rosin

This type of rosin uses dried nugs, mids, shakes, or trim. Flower rosin is highly flavorful. The rosin extraction is done directly on flowers placed in the press or flat iron. Flower rosin quality depends on the quality of the flower, temperature, and pressure used.

Live Rosin

The extraction involves frozen weed plants to preserve terpenes and enhance flavour. The fresh trichomes and terpenes are frozen for at least 24 hours.

Hash Rosin

The rosin concentrate uses dry sift hash or ice water hash. Hashish rosin extraction uses pressure, temperature, and filter bags to enhance purity. It is powerful as the hash is extracted from potent trichome cannabis plant matter. Hash rosin is a great technique to reuse and transform bubble hash leftovers. The high-quality hash rosin melts when smoked because it doesn’t contain vegetable matter.

How is Rosin Made?

How is Rosin Made?

Rosin can be made in simple DIY steps that anyone can follow to attain the extract at home. Homemade rosin is highly flavorful, fresh, and clean in its psychoactive effects. The higher the quality of cannabis input material, the higher the rosin quality produced.

Rosin can be made out of cannabis varieties like:

  • Cannabis flower
  • Trim
  • Kief
  • Hash

The hemp plant is placed in a press with heated pads and then compressed to squeeze out hot oil (rosin) in minutes. Extractors initially used the solventless process to create rosin for violin bows. The collected rosin concentrate doesn’t require extra purification or dilution.

Step To Follow When Making Rosin

Time required: 30 minutes

Things you’ll need:

  • Parchment paper or oil slick sheets (non-wax paper)
  • Cannabis flower (flower, kief, hash)
  • Rosin press/ Straightener
  • Rosin bag
  • Dabber/ collection container
  • Heat-resistant gloves (optional)

Step 1: Flatten the bud gently using your hands

Gently flatten the bud with your hands to ease pressing. Ensure the buds are properly cured and neither too dry nor too wet. Ensure the nug chosen fits inside the parchment and the flat surface of the press.

Step 2: Add the bud to the rosin bag

Place the marijuana plant matter (13-25 units) into the rosin bag. Use nylon food-grade screens or mesh bags, especially for dry sift hash.

Step 3: Adjust the press temperature (straightener)

Set the press temperature beginning with low temperatures as you walk your way up. High temperatures heat the hemp material quickly but can scorch it to generate dark, runny rosin.

Step 4: Place weed flower between parchment paper

Place your hemp flower between two pieces of parchment paper. Use enough amounts under the heating element. Ensure you leave a few inches of extra parchment paper on all sides to hold the rosin and prevent spillover onto the plates.

Step 5: Press until a sizzling sound pops

Use the preheated rosin straightener to press the parchment paper. Press for 4 to 30 seconds, depending on the quality of the cannabis flower. Pressing the flower firmly with the rosin press laying flat will yield better outcomes. Release pressing rosin once you hear a sizzle.

Step 6: Check the oil

Remove the flower from the parchment paper and check the oil amount.

Step 7: Repeat the pressing process until there is no rosin

Reposition the nug onto fresh paper and press rosin again. Press the material thoroughly until there is no more rosin being produced.

Step 8: Collect the rosin using a dabber

After pressing the flowers, use a dabber to collect the rosin.

Step 9: Store collected rosin

Package the collected rosin for future use. Use a dabber to stretch, pull and twist the rosin to turn it into rosin taffy. Block rosin will last for six months to 2 years.

How to Store Rosin For Best Shelf-Life?

How to Store Rosin For Best Shelf-Life?

Rosin is best kept in small, air-tight glass containers. Exposing rosin to the air results in gradual degradation, making it less potent and depreciating in terpenes value. Standard-sized containers hold up to 1 gram of rosin at a time. Storing rosin in tightened containers maximizes freshness while minimizing the air penetrating the glass.

Rosin can be stored at room temperature to deter significant degradation. Typical rosin users keep it in the fridge and thaw the cannabis concentrate to room temperature during usage.

Freeze rosin for long-term storage and preserve as many terpenes as possible. Freezing can cause some degradation over time. Hence it’s crucial to keep frozen rosin in a closed container until it thaws. Opening the container may result in condensation within the jar. Condensation in the container can cause the rosin to rot prematurely.
