- 12 cc spore syringe
- 2/3 cup vermiculite per jar
- 1/4 glass of drinking water per jar
- 1/4 cup organic brown rice flour per jar
- 12 shoulderless 1/2 pint jars
- Large pot with a tight lid
- Disinfectant
- Air sanitizer
- Torch lighter
- Rubbing alcohol
- Latex gloves
- Surgical masks
- Hammer and small nails
- Heavy-duty tin foil
- Micropore tape
- Perlite
- Drill with 1/4” bit
- 50-115L clear plastic storage boxes
- Mixing bowl
- Strainer
- Spray bottle
- Small towel
Follow these steps for the best way to grow shrooms.
Step 1: Prepare Your Jars
Disinfect the hammer and nails, then punch three to four evenly-spaced holes in the lid of each jar.
Step 2: Make Your Substrate
Use the mixing bowl to combine 2/3 cup vermiculite and around 1/4 glass of water. Disinfect your strainer and then remove excess water. Add 1/4 cup of organic brown rice flour to the mixture. These quantities are for one jar. You can prepare one jar at a time or work in bigger batches depending on the size of your mixing bowl.
Step 3: Fill Your Jars
Disinfect your glass jars, then fill them with substrate up to one inch under the rim. Tightly screw the lid onto each jar and wrap the cover with foil, ensuring no water can get into the jar.
Step 4: Sterilize Your Jars
Place the towel into the bottom of your pot, then place your jars upright on the pot. The towel protects the bottom of your jars. Carefully fill the pot halfway with water, ensuring that the jars remain upright and no water gets into the jars.
Put the pot on the stove and slowly bring the water to a boil. Keep an eye on the water level and add more if it runs out. Let the jars steam for around 90 minutes, then cool overnight at room temperature.
Step 5: Sterilize Your Syringe
Use the torch lighter to heat the needle of your syringe until it’s red hot. Don’t touch the needle with your bare skin, as this could recontaminate it. Instead, use rubbing alcohol to wipe and cool the syringe. Next, use your hands to pull the plunger slightly. Shake and mix the solution and draw it into the syringe. That is a foundational step in how to grow shrooms, so don’t rush through it.
Step 6: Add Mixture To The Jars
Remove the foil from one of your jars. Insert the syringe as far as you can through one of the holes in the lid and inject around 1/4 cc of solution. Tape the tops of the jar with micropore tape and clean the syringe with alcohol.
Repeat this step for each of your jars, being careful to clean the needle after each jar. Keeping your syringe clean is a vital part of learning how to grow magic mushrooms.
Step 7: Let Jars Develop
Move the jars to a safe place away from direct sunlight. The best way to grow shrooms is to keep them between 70-80° F while they develop.
Step 8: Check The Development
You may start seeing tiny white mycelium after a week of development. That may take more time, so check again in a week. After a month, you should see colonies or cakes in more than half the jars. Give your mushrooms another week so the mycelium can strengthen.
If any of your jars look contaminated or in any way “bad,” you should dispose of that jar. Be careful to wrap the jar in a secure bag and dispose of them outside, keeping the lid closed.
Step 9: Prepare Your Storage Container
Use your drill and drill holes all over the storage container, including the lid and the base. You should keep your container on four steady objects to keep it off the ground. That allows airflow underneath your storage container, which is essential when you’re discovering how to grow psilocybin mushrooms. Consider covering your container with a towel to help the moisture level.
Step 10: Add Perlite
Soak perlite in cold tap water in your filter. Allow the perlite to dry, then spread it evenly across the bottom of your storage container. Repeat this process until you have a 3-5 inch layer of perlite in the container.
Step 11: Add Your Cakes
Rehydrate and roll the cakes from your jars, then transfer them to the storage container. Keep the container moist and ventilated, and mushrooms should appear between 6-12 days. Now that you know how to grow magic mushrooms, you’re ready to prepare your own crop at home.
