What is Psilocybin?

What is Psilocybin

Psilocybin refers to hallucinogens that are known to produce effects that resemble LSD. Usually, this is experienced when one consumes magic mushrooms, known as shrooms

Consumers experience hallucinations and an alteration of consciousness which takes 15 to 45 minutes to set in and could even last up to 6 hours.

What is Psilocybin?

You may have heard about magic mushrooms and have an idea of their effects. But what is psilocybin? These are psychedelic compounds that occur naturally.

Over 200 species of different fungi produce it, but the most common form known and used by many people is the magic mushroom. They are the most popular shrooms among the best psilocybin mushroom representative species.

This hallucinogenic substance is obtained from magic mushrooms (a type of wild mushroom) that is known to be indigenous to the South American tropical and subtropical regions.

What Does Taking Psilocybin Feel Like?

What Does Taking Psilocybin Feel Like?

Psilocybin has both positive and adverse effects. One clear thing is that the effects vary from person to person. The general effect is hallucinations (both mental and visual), euphoric effects, a distortion of the sense of time, and perceptions of spiritual experiences.

Sometimes, the effects are adverse, and users experience nausea and panic attacks. This substance has positive and negative effects depending on how it is used.

It helps to appreciate that everyone has a different experience with psilocybin. The effects and experience can be categorized in terms of the various stages.

These include:

Early- Stages Effects

This phase covers the pre-ingestion and mental preparation stage, ingestion stage, onset, body load/ high, first hallucination, and intensifying hallucination stages. Each of these phases has different manifestations.

For the pre-ingestion stage, most users are anxious and eager to experience it all. Some people eat certain foods to enhance their experience and not irritate their mood.

The ingestion stage is when you consume the substance. Most people nibble on the mushroom using their front teeth as this activates the ingredients and helps them feel relaxed when the effects kick in. Patience is key at this stage.

The onset begins after 15 to 20 minutes and is first experienced visually. Many people notice that they have a clearer vision and increased focus. Some people develop mild nausea, which is how they nibble on some ginger.

The body high and body load stages set in when one begins to experience euphoric feelings. It feels like a sense of heaviness and relaxation. Some people become more talkative at this stage, while others get happier and smile or laugh more.

The first hallucination stage happens subtly. Psilocybin mushroom users begin to experience changes in colours slowly, and things start to be exaggerated with unique yet strange variations. Many users experience the breathing effect where the world seems to breathe as things seem to have pulses and rhythms.

Depending on the mushrooms one consumes, the dosage may be higher than usual. In such cases, the users experience even more intense hallucinations. These manifest in stranger effects which may include floating and dancing effects.

Some users start seeing non-existent objects, as some claim to see ghosts. They feel each thing so intensely.

The Peak Phase

This happens after the second or third hour of ingesting the magic mushroom. The sensations users feel at this stage are more intense, and all forms of rationality are lost.

It is categorized into three phases, namely the:

  • Psychedelic phase – Colours move from intense to stereotypically psychedelic as users become controlled by the colour palette. White may seem to have many different other colours. Things also start to feel extremely overwhelming.
  • Fractal phase – Users begin to see beautiful geometrical patterns. They see different patterns, including spirals, cobwebs, tunnels, fractals, and checkerboards. Colours become distorted at this stage.
  • Loss of Spirituality and Self – Lost connections and sense happen here. The users lose a sense of boundaries and seem to dissolve with the rest of the universe. They feel a deep understanding of acceptance of self, others, and emotions; hence it is a great time to deal with traumas.

The Come Down

This also has three categories that mark the end of the psychedelic effects. It starts with the post-peak, where taste sensations are intensified. The users suddenly know every taste and flavour and may have specific cravings because their senses are heightened.

The next stage is the almost-sober phase. The colour intensity and visual distortion almost resolve themselves. Users feel a sense of wellness and emotional peace but can also experience mental fatigue.

Lastly, they experience the full sober stage. Users, at this point, are aware of the impact and are emotionally stable. Some feel very hungry too.

Benefits of Psilocybin

Psilocybin has several positive effects, as proven by users’ experiences. This has further been backed up by research findings where psilocybin therapy helps with several conditions.

The most popular benefit is relieving signs of depression and anxiety. This hallucinogenic substance can alter the brain and help treat mental disorders when properly manipulated. This explains why it effectively treats conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Additionally, it seems to work perfectly for anxiety, especially the kind that is related to illnesses. Psilocybin also helps people struggling with terminal cancer. It has been found to help reduce stress and depression in patients with terminal/ life-threatening disorders and cancers.

Side Effects of Psilocybin

Like it is with the positive effects, psilocybin also has its downside. Some of the adverse effects come about when the dosage is not controlled or when there is abuse.

These effects include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Headache
  • Hallucinations
  • Fear
  • Confusion
  • Paranoia
  • Nausea

When used the right way, psilocybin has massive benefits. However, the possibility of physical dependence, as well as the severe side effects, has negative implications.
